The 1900 advertisement
On January 20, 1900, The Free State of Brandon, Mississippi printed an advertisement for John Brennan's liquor business. It gave the address 330 S. Washington St., Vicksburg, Miss., promoted the jug trade, and advertised Brennan's Choice whiskey. Brennan described his enterprise as the state's oldest liquor house and claimed an 1868 establishment date. The advertisement proves these claims were made, not that every claim was true.

Why Brennan matters
Brennan's business connects the river-city liquor trade to regional mail-order advertising, branded whiskey, reusable containers, and the competitive commercial environment of the late nineteenth century. A contemporary advertising critic compared Brennan's marketing with that of another Vicksburg dealer, Wesley Crayton. Their story will eventually support a linked exhibit, but this first research page remains focused on Brennan.
Historical mapping
Before displaying a pin, we must locate the address on a contemporary map, check Vicksburg street renumbering, and compare that location with modern parcels. The Library of Congress offers free-to-reuse 1886 and 1892 Sanborn maps. The relevant sheet and precise property identification remain to be established.
Research still required
Obtain the full 1898 Bates advertising comparison and its underlying newspaper advertisements; locate Brennan in dated city directories; identify surviving branded containers with reliable provenance; reconcile street numbers; seek a historic storefront photograph and a matching modern photograph; establish image rights and source captions.
